McDonald’s has announced that is will no longer be buying advertising time on Family Guy, according to the Parents Television Council (PTC). The PTC has long been asking family-friendly companies not to buy airtime spots anymore on the popular Fox comedy.
“McDonald’s does not sponsor the program in Canada,” said a specialist working for McDonald’s. “However, McDonald’s Canada has, on occasion, run advertisements during the program. Based on the concerns you have brought to our attention, the marketing team have made the decision not to purchase advertising space during this program in the future.”
This isn’t the first time a high profile company has opted to halt relations with companies that deal with adult-oriented content. For example, when Disney purchased the rights for the Marvel Comics, Disney began terminating the contracts of all its adult-themed games that Marvel had previously licensed. These included games such as slot games that featured in Las Vegas casinos as well as on many popular digital platforms.
Similar to Marvel’s push to launch a slew of adult-themed games before the Disney buyout, Family Guy also has a licensed slot game that is intended for the more mature demographic. According to entertainment analysts, McDonald’s Canada’s decision to pull their focus from advertising on Family Guy, will probably work out for both parties in the long run as there have been a series of complaints in what has been a checkered past in terms of their relationship.
“We applaud McDonald’s Canada for taking a bold step not to associate its family brand with [Family Guy]” said Tim Winter, the president of the PTC. “It’s a courageous, yet common sense decision, and we are proud of this branch of McDonald’s for choosing to put families first in its advertising decisions.”
Fox has yet to reply with a comment but the PTC is not expecting any further developments. Given its history, Fox is unlikely to respond to the PTC’s efforts to remove ads from Family Guy, as well as the numerous complaints that the Federal Communications Commission has received over the years.
