At Northwood Public School, there are some very bright young minds with their heads in the cloud.
As schools begin to embrace the BYOD paradigm of an increasingly connected world, the institution is taking a progressive approach to learning. Pursuant to the Peel Board’s vision for 21st Century Teaching and Learning, Northwood Public School’s curriculum incorporates cloud-based technologies to enhance comprehension, retention, and engagement.
“Inevitably, smartphones and tablets will be a part of academic life. Although there needs to be a balance, there is a real benefit to putting assistive technologies in the hands of more children,” says Donna Barlow, the principal of Northwood Public School. “There’s a great deal to be achieved through this strategy.”
To support the school in its mission, cloud communications provider Jive Canada in Burlington, ON, recently donated a set of iPads to the school.
“When we look at the ‘anywhere, anytime’ benefits of a cloud approach, we’re definitely speaking the same language,” says Carl Watene, the Director of Sales for Jive Canada.
Adam Lowe, who is a teacher at Northwood, has been closely involved with the initiative, and sees a notable shift in student engagement.
“Educational apps have come so far the last few years,” says Lowe. “They now reach across the spectrum of our curriculum, and help drive learning through interactive media that truly resonate.”
Lowe explains how learning software can deliver real-world context to subjects such as math.
“We walked around the grounds taking photos of trees and structures, and identifying angles in the environment,” he says. “Students still need to do the same work to get the right answers, but the material strikes new chords due to how it’s delivered.”
Each Northwood student receives a Gmail account through the school, which provides a complete cloud ecosystem and follows the student through his or her academic career. The school has also recently moved to standardizing on netbooks and Chromebooks, which are inherently cloud-centric and extremely portable. In addition, Northwood has developed a computer lab, built and run on sustainable funds.

Watene notes that his company is examining additional avenues to collaborate with the school, including a proposed Technology Night to be held in the fall.
“We commend Northwood for their forward-looking strategy,” says Watene. “This is a stellar example of how cloud technologies deliver benefits beyond the world of business.”
