Security is the watchword these days. Every company must stay safe from fraud, thievery, and vandalism. If you think your company could use an extra level of protection but don’t have the budget for a massive security makeover, here are four simple ways to increase security at your company. These ideas can give you a greater sense of protection for your employees and assets.
Educate Your Employees
Your employees are your first line of defense during a security breach, physically or digitally. They can also be your weakest link if they don’t have the training to recognize threats. Conduct regular educational sessions about security and cybersecurity. Make sure they know what to do and who to contact in case of a problem with a customer, a potential break-in, or hacking. Also, teach them about ways computer criminals try to trick them into giving up private or proprietary information. Most of all, keep the lines of communication open!
Monitor Your Mailroom
Your mailroom is a big port of entry for any number of dangers. Luckily, the benefits of locking mailboxes for your business include protecting the mail! Monitor who goes in and out of your mailroom. Messengers, couriers, and package delivery representatives (or people disguised as them, can enter your facility through the mailroom. Restrict deliveries to the mailroom to minimize traffic through the office. Establish suspicious package protocols and, if possible, ensure the system for the mailroom doesn’t connect with any other part of the office. This provides a layer of protection from letters and packages bearing explosives, pathogens, and other dangers.
Know Who’s Coming in and Out
Do you know who’s in your office at any given time? Make sure only authorized personnel are there by issuing ID cards to employees. Electronic access cards are ideal, but at the very least, an employee in the reception area should check for IDs. Visitors without them must be signed in and issued passes that they wear on a visible sticker or lanyard. Also, you can use computer programs that sign in, tally, and note whether a person has permission to be where they are.
Perform Regular Safety Inspections
Another simple way to increase security at your company is to appoint a security committee and have them conduct a monthly review of the security procedures, whether they’re effective, and whether new policies and procedures are necessary. If a breach occurs, this team should immediately conduct an investigation into how it happened and how it can be prevented in the future.
